One China Policy

My friend eyedoc, who runs a blog on Taiwan history and culture among other things, http://danshuihistory.blogspot.tw/, sent me this letter, which was used by then Taiwan president Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) and his lawyers.

The letter outlines the United States' commitment to Taiwan.

It is interesting to learn that a letter by a private citizen, Ferdinand K. Chen(陳光博)to local congressional representative, Richard Pombo can be passed on and finally get an answer from Clifford A. Hart, Jr. then the Director of Office of Taiwan Coordination.
More so is that a letter reply to a private citizen can be used by the party in power, Democratic Progressive Party, DPP as its political-terms against opponent party, KMT.
It would be more interesting to read the original letter from Chen to Pombo. Anybody has it? Please share.

Appears that America regards Taiwan as not being independent from China?

Pity...

The idea that Taiwan is, or could ever be, a US territory, is one of the stupidest brainwaves ever to come out of the Taiwanese independence movement. Independence cannot be won by claiming that the terrirtory you want to declare independent is a satrap of another state.
