Our Restaurant


Shufang and I have decided to open a restaurant here in Taipei: The Hammer, No. 14-Lane 9, Wanhua Rd., Yonghe, New Taipei City / 新北市永和區文化路9巷14號. We have already rented the place, in Yonghe. It's still a mess; it'll need a bit of renovation.


This is the upstairs. More renovation in store. The idea is to soft open in early November (evenings and weekends). We'll keep the menu fairly simple: Italian and Mexican, brunch on the weekends, and a selection of spirits. There are still a ton of issues to clear up. We'll have to see how it goes.


This is the ceiling upstairs. It's probably coming out. Underneath is an A-frame, which looks promising. The renovator who came to place a bid this evening agreed it was tacky, but warned of higher electricity bills should we decide to take the plunge. I think it has to come out though; it's more like an office and kind of ugly.

Hi Pat,
Starting a small business, eh? It is the best combination for income tax purpose in the States, one salary and one business married filling jointly, though I don't know the tax system in Taiwan today, you gonna have a lot of write off from the business part.
My advise, do as much as by yourself, if I were you, I would take day off and remove that ceiling by myself to save every penny. Don't forget to collect all receipts for tax purpose. BTW, who is going to do the booking? I suggest Pat, you should do the dish washing as I have done. I wish you learn more by starting a business together with your wife than making money. ChoSan

I am still going to work in the university and I have a lot of freelance projects for writing. Actually, we just want to start small (thus no reservations and only open in the evenings.

I had the same idea, but my wife says since a renovator is coming, just to make them do everything on our list. Besides, I don't know what to do with that ceiling once it comes out. I probably can't throw it in a few garbage bags and put it at the curb. But thanks for the suggestions.

Just out of curiosity, what does one do with a lot of garbage in Taipei? Is there a dump?
