My wife says this is a lane in Wanhua (萬華) that contains the homes of many soldiers who escaped China in 1949. Luckily for them, Taiwan has been generous in taking them in. Some have prospered while all have been measured stability and a decent quality of life. In Taiwan, there is something close 100,000 KMT soldiers still receiving pensions for their service in China during the 1930s and 40s right now.

Don’t forget that Taiwan was illegally occupied by KMT since the end of WWII and KMT also has made Taiwan one of its provinces. When they were defeated by the communists in mainland, KMT simply walked in Taiwan without asking Taiwanese for permission to take them in or not.

Yes, they worked for KMT all their lives since 30s and 40s. Some of them even have participated and executed the innocent Taiwanese during the 228 incident. However, they all drink Taiwan’s water, eat Taiwan’s rice and receive pensions from Taiwanese continuously after their retirement; yet they still all vote for KMT.

I wonder about the pensions. I recall reading somewhere that when military pensioners die, their heirs continue to recieve the pension and other related public benefits (such as subsidized housing in preferred locations, etc.). Is that the case?
The whole extended family then has financial incentives to support any party that will maintain or even expand benefits.

If not, it could go on anyway as a part of a scam. I'll find out though.

It depends on the terms of their retirement contract (at least in theory). If they opted for a lump sum upon retirement, it should be "no." If they take, lets say a pension paid over seven years, then that money should be theirs (their family's) even if they pass before that time.
