Did they arrive at the scene on scooters?

The wrecked scooter and personal effects are still there, after over a week and even through Typhoon Kalmegi. The rain coat has been kicked down to the crosswalk. The wrecked scooter seems to be working its way in the opposite direction. The plates are now gone however.

I wonder what the thinking is behind this. Did the victim get out of the hospital, buy a new scooter, come back for the plates but leave his scooter, shoes and rain coat? If he's still hospitalized or worse, why doesn't someone clean it up for him?Patrick Cowsillhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12904899672214340947noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5353489745782837825.post-55682264458286654212008-07-31T14:39:00.000+08:002008-07-31T14:39:00.000+08:00Hi Patrick,This happened just yesterday near the S...Hi Patrick,
This happened just yesterday near the Shuanglien MRT stop: Guy in a Nissan March plowed into a scooter. He hit the scooter so hard, his car and the scooter traveled all the way across the road up onto the sidewalk and finally smashed into the concrete pillar of an electrical box. 4 people had to be taken away by ambulance.

Long story short, a couple of cops got there quickly, but then disappeared for about 10 minutes. As I watched out my window, I saw the (drunk) driver walk into a convenient store and buy three bottles of Supau and guzzle them in short order then smoke a couple of cigs. Finally the cops came back and took him away in a taxi. WTF? Just another day in Taipei.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5353489745782837825.post-19790354962599094912008-07-30T01:20:00.000+08:002008-07-30T01:20:00.000+08:00MJ, You've got to stop those crazy buggers, or at ...MJ,

You've got to stop those crazy buggers, or at least get out there and give them a hand.

BTW, my colleague has been putting up some great photos of Taiwan at http://tirugondar.wordpress.com/
I think you might like them.Patrick Cowsillhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12904899672214340947noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5353489745782837825.post-88227358433653583882008-07-29T22:24:00.000+08:002008-07-29T22:24:00.000+08:00we recently had 3 split system AC units installed ...we recently had 3 split system AC units installed in our home. i have shots of one of the guys hanging off the 4th floor window cage (he climbed down from the roof). to get to the 3rd floor, he used an extension ladder placed on the carport roof (and very near the edge). these guys got gonads to say the least.

Patrick, you've had some bad luck with traffic! i've ridden plenty of buses but never saw anything like you have! wow!MJ Kleinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16859263977094071677noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5353489745782837825.post-32937127527470686472008-07-28T11:33:00.000+08:002008-07-28T11:33:00.000+08:00I think they don't want to be a bother to other pe...I think they don't want to be a bother to other people; but I don't understand how other people would them go out on the ledge to retrieve the air conditioner in the first place. Actually, I do. If they were to fall, some people might feel responsible but others would just say "oh well, they're not in my family."

"Or a belief that the gods will take care of them, along the lines of "as Allah wills it"?

They must think someone is looking over them, that it's impossible for them to get in an accident. Why else would they drive like this, or, worse, put their kids on a scooter with (or without - it makes no difference if they fall off with an infant) a helmet?Patrick Cowsillhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12904899672214340947noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5353489745782837825.post-77267764970804466092008-07-28T10:31:00.000+08:002008-07-28T10:31:00.000+08:00That photo of the men working on the air condition...That photo of the men working on the air conditioner reminded me of the worker I saw who was using a jackhammer to demolish a ledge of a building in Tainan. The thing was he was standing on the very ledge he was in the process of destroying without any safety equipment at all, several floors above the ground. Is it a macho thing? Or a belief that the gods will take care of them, along the lines of "as Allah wills it"?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
